    OUCH!

What exactly is BLM COST RECOVERY?

It seems to me that that is the killer. I don't know how you got out of it with that little loss after seeing that.

Cost Recovery is BLM getting paid back allegedly for the hours they spent processing the permit, it also covers things like LE on site and observers. Cost Recovery was not being applied at previous events, it should have been but it was not. Now it is. This is why the ticket costs are going up for future events. Just like Burning Man.

        >>Cost Recovery is BLM getting paid back allegedly for the hours they spent processing the permit<<
Hehehe so what do the permitting fees cover? The cost of that expensive paper and ink?
        :P
        Gotta love the govamint.

Look we got guns and cannons and more explosive than the army. I say we pick any damn lake we want and they can withdraw troups from Iraq to kick us off. Win-Win....

Oh I can see it now, we don't have enough issues with the CCFD and BLM here comes the NSA with the 'legal' wiretaps, frozen bank accounts (maybe that could work in our favor?) and none of us will be able to fly anywhere again. The 'core members' of the Dark Skies terrorist cell can waive to us from Guantanemo on the evening news, but don't worry they'll have the best free health care there. :)

This is all just a little speed bump, we'll get it all figured out. What does it take to do this on private land? If we are paying so much for blm fees each event what would it take to buy some land? There are places in nowhere nevada that sell for pretty cheap ($10 -20,000 an acre) which is a huge chunk of change, but may be something to work towards. Hmm do dry lakebeds ever go on sale? lol What kind of permits need to be filed then? Insurance etc?

...are totally scary. I would never mess with the NSA. They'd be totally in control of the net...if they existed...

    • DUMPSTER $1,190.00
Cost saving could have been not to have it, and have participants take their trash home
OR... was this part of the clean up? (except later the cost of site cleanup is a separate item)

    • ICE $850.00
Was there income from ice sales?

    • INTERNET, SUPPORT, SUBSCRIPTIONS $321.06
Isn't that part of the Vegas Artists site?
    Also... why so expensive anyway?

    • VEHICLE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE $435.35
    Tell us more?

    • GATE SALES 40 $2,200.00
That works out at $55/ticket - I thought gate tickets were more expensive?

    =======
But this is all penny pinching compared to the BLM portion of the expenses at 50% of the total budget!

I'm pretty sure that the promoters are going to have trash and there is going to be a certain amount of moop (fireworks, ash, etc.) to clean up, so a dumpster only makes sense.

An Internet site for $27 a month isn't bad.

One car breaking down or getting stuck and being towed could easily cost $435.

And I'd imagine there were at least a few artists that were permitted to buy $40 tickets at the gate. There could have been 20 regulars and 5 $40 tix. That's $2200 right there.

Dunno about the ice, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to keep your volunteers cool.

      EXACTLY.
Could some stuff have been cheaper? Yup.
Would it have made any difference overall?
      No, not really.

Thank you for the openness and the information. I had a great time this year, and we'll be there next year!

That $20K &c for the BLM -- could that instead be used to pay a private landowner instead, for the use of their land? Say $10K payment and $10K "cleanup bond" or something? Anyhoo armchair management from here, worth what you paid for it :-) Thanks for doing all that work.

      Thank you!!
As Burning Man learned the hard way in '97, private land opens up even more cans of worms than dealing with the BLM. Zoning, permitting, variances, commercial use, etc. It quickly becomes a pig fuck.
And then the sheriff shows up and steal the front gate money.

We've looked into it pretty seriously and it's not a viable option at this time.
On the bright side we are talking with Delamar about moving it for '08, watch this space. We HAVE to get the big fire back.
      thanks again!

I can be done, but as Cameron says, it is not as easy at it sounds.

Flipside, Element 11 and FdlM were all on private property. But all the sites were already campgrounds; i.e. they were just being rented by a "camping group". But Flipside has to stay to a limited number of participants (TX "rave laws"), FdlM is moving, etc. There are still rules, they are just different rules.

Example: how many people can camp out on someones farm (i.e. zoned for farming) before it becomes a zoning violation. I am sure it varies by county! Do you need a county business license? Etc.
