AGENDA
What is Burning Man?
Burning Man is a weeklong camping and arts festival that occurs annually north of Reno on the Black Rock Desert (playa). It was started in 1986 and has since grown to over 50,000 people. It is one of the largest arts festivals in the world with a gross budget of over 10 million dollars and a working staff of over 3,000. During its existence, BM has spurred off shoot organizations including The Black Rock Arts Foundation, and Burners Without Borders.
10-Principals www.burningman.com/whatisburn...ciples.html
In 2001 Burning Man issued its 10 principals, which are guidelines for their communities to follow. The 10 principals are not commandments but rather suggested guidelines. This is NOT a church.
The Las Vegas Burning Man community
Was formally started in 1999 when Tony Bondi was named regional contact by Burning Man. In 2002 Tiya Coleman was added as co regional. In 2004 Cameron Grant was added as co regional. Since those times the Las Vegas Burners community has grown to over 100 active and participating members.
Other communities in Las Vegas
The Vegas Vortex, 1st First Friday, The Las Vegas Jam Band Society, NOISE, Las Vegas Belly dancers, and many others. Many of us are involved with many different communities at all times and in various capacities.
What does the community here in Las Vegas want to see happen?
This depends on you! It is about participation and is not a spectator sport. Communities are driven by the individuals who take the initiative to get involved and make S**T happen.
What is Dark Skies? darkskies.vegasartists.com/
Dark Skies is a Burning Man regional event that directly mirrors Burning Man’s operating plan and business structure. Dark Skies is produced on BLM land. The reason we chose to mirror Burning Man was that to produce any event of this type on public lands in Nevada, you simply must do it ‘this way’ or risk getting shut down. It is produced by an LLC that was formed to navigate the BLM administration and regulatory requirements which are numerous and daunting. Dark Skies is an all ages volunteer driven event just like Burning Man. Dark Skies is however less than on hundredth the size of Burning Man. There have been 5 Dark Skies events produced so far with the next one scheduled for June 19-22, 2008.
Darks Skies goals
To provide a safe and legal location for artists of all kinds to display and produce their art. Dark Skies goal is to help to unify and promote Las Vegas and regional artists of all kinds. This includes theme camps, performers, and fire artists among many others. Another of Dark Skies goals is to ultimately begin funding and promoting local artists here in Las Vegas. It is the community that will decide weather or not Dark Skies will continue into the future. So far it’s been a lot of work, and a lot of fun!
