I heard through the rumor mill that I was banned from this event!
Is this true or not?
If so, why? I've never done anything bad at the event, in fact quite the reverse, including volunteering time at the gate quite a few times, helped significantly both in my computer skills, information for a regular article, and financially, to the newsletter and survey a few times. I also helped one of the popular events have some equipment they found useful and I remember needed. I've gifted items, and have helped a number of people with issues they had (eg jump start cars and tidy up moop). And years ago, helped a little with researching a location for the possible site.
Maybe it's because I broke up with a long time girlfriend who attends the event, but I don't believe you can ban someone because of this, surely?
Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, if not, where do I ask?
PS I also heard some other extremely distorted rumors about me to do with the ex. I can guess who promotes these distortions, but let me say what I heard was FAR from the truth and almost a case to sue for defamation of character!
Some advice, as sung by "Public Enemy":
• "Don't believe the hype!"
Seriously, don't.

Re: Banned?!?
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 9:42 PMI haven't heard or seen a list of banned people from the event. And as far as I know it hasn't been mentioned.
That's one of the sad things about the rumor mill. It's unreliable as hell.
Hell rumor has it I hated people who I gave every courtesy to and it's far from the truth. And even after all the crap they put me through I still don't hate them and just wish they would talk to me instead of avoid me.
My advice would be to e-mail directly to the producers of the event your concerns about bannings, or show up at the public meetings. -

Re: Banned?!?
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 12:52 AMI should have added, you and I even had fun with a camera on long exposure, some blinkies, to make the words "Porno Pyro Pirates" float in the air - sort of. Do you remember, see: btd.snpx.net/images/view.cgi
Well... I thought it was fun!
But as to attending the public meetings, that's difficult:
a) I'm about 550 miles away, and I know some people think driving that distance "just to chat" is acceptable behavior, I do not. Who knows, it might cause my car to break down?
b) I'm trying hard to not to be continued to be harassed by someone in Las Vegas, so even showing up at a meeting they'll probably be at, is definitely not a good thing to do.
Yes, I could email the organizers, but again one of them is the person mentioned in "b".
But I think I do have Cameron's direct phone number, so that's probably best, but it might all be moot since going to the event would be unwise with person "b" probably attending, they were able to track me down in Black Rock City (although not too difficult - since I did post my approximate location in a tribe blog) so considering the relatively small size of the event, and considering I'd want a nice time there, ie not to be harassed and/or stalked by someone trying to possibly emotionally pressure money out of me, which they've managed to trick out of me (in serious amounts) in the past :-(

Re: Banned?!?
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 10:06 AMEveryone is banned, in fact the only people even allowed on Delamar Lake are BLM LE, and their tickets currently cost $14,286.33 +-, but that could change if they want per diem, manicures, and hotel rooms again. -

Slip into a girdle, slide on a pink dress and go in disguise. -

Good advice. Thanks Tony!
I might wear blue instead, and a mask, or something like that :-)
Yes, I do want to go. It's a great event.
For me, I have a plan for a new structure, and I want to test it out on a playa surface, as well as a vehicle I might have built by then! I want to test it.
Hint to others thinking about this event (or not):
Dark Skies is a great event to "test out things" for Burningman on the Black Rock Desert, it's the same surface and similar environment, and a pre-run test is always a good thing to do, so I REALLY love this event exists. But you can try out your tent there, or just get a feel if you'd enjoy a week of it - or not.
The people are great, friendly, and all you'd expect to meet as Burners. If you enjoy it there, you're likely to enjoy Burningman.
Also... think about it, if you cannot go to the Black Rock Desert for whatever reason, Dark Skies is a great event in its own right, and very Burner-esque.
I've been to a number of regional events, and Dark Skies is the only one to be held on the same playa surface. That's why I love it.
So well done Cameron for all you do (and to the others who do everything else) but I am a little worried if the current upcoming event Pirate Ron advertised, as the way you spoke it doesn't sound like it's going to happen :-(
So... I hope that was just humor about not being able to use Delamar Lake?
Tell me there are no problems with BLM & LE there (as well). Please, please, please.
Yeah I've got a personal issue with someone who goes to it. It'll be ok (in reality), and if not, I'll deal with it, or ignore it, and hopefully they'll be advised to be adult and/or ignore me too. But I'll enjoy everything and everyone else there. The positives outweigh the negative for me. So I will try to go (gotta check that vacation balance though) - assuming it's happening, and hoping this ban I've heard on me is just a silly rumor.
And I recommend everyone should go too. -

Re: Banned?!?
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 11:57 AMI wouldn't take Cams post too seriously. Ya see, the BLM posts that service Burningman are getting incredibly well funded off it. While the rest of the BLM and the forestry service are cutting back, the Black Rock branch has a fleet of new vehicles, uniforms, etc. So, naturally, when you drop in with any event on BLM land and use the magic words "Burning Man" the local branch feels like it can start digging into deep pockets that aren't there. And they start asking for stuff like hotel rooms and (frighteningly enough) manicures.
This would be the primary reason for downplaying the attachment to Burning Man on the website. -

Theme Camp Idea
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 12:17 PMBLM & LEO: Manies & Pedies - A great way to keep the relationship between Dark skies & BLM/LE as happy as possible - not to mention the added bonus of knowing exactly where they are while their pearly pink fingers & toes air dry.
Wonder how many of the MI gals know how to paint nails....guess we should start practicing!
And hey!! I haven't done anything either (well, that I've been *caught* at).....Can I be banned too? We could have the Banned Camp (American Dream Pie?!?!)...We'll all bring flutes and lots of apples :) -

Thu, January 3, 2008 - 1:34 PMblue is cool too.
But with pink you could match with the rangers!

Re: Theme Camp Idea
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 1:00 AMI can play an ocarina (flute-ish), and I *love* apples (but not in a pie).

Yup, interactive art providing distraction whist "banned" individuals redecorate official vehicles. -

Re: Theme Camp Idea
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 5:05 PMAh the ocarina...makes me long for the Italian shore! I haven't the dexterity for the 12 holes - but I'm handy enough to hand ya a drink during a break in the entertainment ;) And there are so many other things to do with Apples besides Pies :-)....Unfortunately it's the wrong time of year to bring *truly* fresh....but the cold storage ones are bad either.
I like Widget’s idea of decorating the vehicles while the ‘subjects’ are occupied elsewhere too….Now, where did I leave that really pretty gold flake polish…. -
